Veteran journalist and television personality Don Lemon has been named the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Truth Awards, a recognition ceremony that honors outstanding contributions to journalism, truth-telling, and the ongoing effort to hold powerful institutions accountable through rigorous, independent reporting. The award recognizes Lemon’s more than two decades of work across major television news organizations, during which he became one of the most recognizable and frequently discussed figures in American broadcast journalism.
Lemon built his journalism career through positions at a range of local and network news organizations before joining CNN in 2006, where he would go on to anchor prime-time programming for more than 17 years. During his CNN tenure, he became known for an approach that combined traditional news reporting with an increasing willingness to offer personal commentary and perspective — an approach that made him both widely praised and frequently criticized depending on viewers’ own perspectives about the role of journalistic voice in contemporary news broadcasting.
His coverage of major national stories including the Ferguson unrest, numerous natural disasters, the Black Lives Matter movement, and multiple presidential campaigns brought him widespread recognition alongside occasional controversy. Lemon has spoken publicly about the challenges of being a Black journalist in a newsroom and media landscape that has historically not adequately represented the perspectives and experiences of Black Americans in positions of authority and visibility.
Following his departure from CNN in 2023, Lemon has continued working in media through his own production ventures, including a podcast and various digital media projects.
